Objective(s)
Our recent article on glaucoma stated that systemic adverse effects of ophthalmic beta blockers include bradycardia. A reader suggested we should have also mentioned that they rarely cause heart block, particularly in patients receiving other negative chronotropic drugs such as verapamil or diltiazem, and when that occurs, stopping the ophthalmic beta blocker may avoid insertion of a pacemaker.
